#3 : PYEONGCHANG: STADIUM AND TOURISM RESOURCES (PART 2)

Hello guys! I'm going to continue the 2nd part from my previous post on Pyeongchang. If you read the previous post, it's all about Pyeongchang stadium only. So today I'm going to write on the tourism resources of Pyeongchang. Let's get started!

1. Daegwallyeong Skyranch (대관령 하늘목장)

Established in 1974, the Daegwallyeong Sky Ranch has a 40-year-old history with a huge ranch size of 9 million square meters (=three times the size of Yeouido in Seoul). Currently, about 400 Holstein cows are breeded along with one hundred hanu (Korean cow) in an environmentally friendly way. The ranch located in a high land, so the weather is so nice even in summer, the weather is still nice and a good place for walking.

2. Samyang Eco Green Campus (에코그린 캠퍼스 (삼양목장))

Asia's largest green pasture, this vast meadow is where milking cows feed on the fresh, clean grass. The view from the plateau, reaching a height of 1,470 meters, is remarkable as well. If you go up to Daegwallyeong Observatory, you can see as far as Gangneung, Jumunjin, and even the East Sea beyond.

3. Daegwallyeong Sheep Farm (대관령 양떼목장)

Daegwallyeong Sheep Farm raises sheep on an area of 195 k㎡, and is privately owned. There are many ranches in Pyeongchang, but Daegwallyeong Sheep Farm is the only ranch that raises sheep. The sheep grazing field is surrounded by a 1.2 meter-long circular walkway, so visitors can view the sheep at all times during their visit. It takes about 40 minutes to walk along this path. A wooden shack located in the field appeared as a backdrop of the movie "The Man from Mars." The wooden shack fits perfectly with the sheep farm, and has become a popular photo site. To get a closer experience with the sheep, sign up for the feeding experience, where you can give dried hay to the sheep and even reach out to touch their fuzzy heads.

4. Pyeongchang Uiyaji Wind Village (평창 의야지 바람마을)

Located on the highlands of Pyeongchang County where the 2018 Winter Olympics will be held, Uiyaji Baram Maeul (Uiyaji Wind Village) is a mountain village situated on top of Daegwallyeong. At Uiyaji Wind Village, one can enjoy various types of activities such as making cheese or ice cream as well as enjoying the beautiful sight of wind-mills standing high above the frozen plain.

(정강원(한국전통음식문화체험관))

Jeonggangwon was established in order to preserve, research, distribute and promote the values and merits of traditional Korean food culture in the world. There are various hands-on facilities for traditional food culture such as an exhibition hall, cooking room, and a fermentation room, spread throughout an area of 10,000 pyeong (33057.85㎡) in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do. The center is a great place for anyone who wants to learn more about traditional Korean food culture and take part in various aspects of traditional Korean food culture.

Woljeongsa Temple is located in the forest valley east of Mt. Odaesan, and is in charge of over 60 temples and 8 monasteries made into one large temple. Woljeongsa Temple was established by Monk Ja Jang (590-658). At  Woljeongsa Temple there is the Seongbo Museum where you can view the Buddhist culture of the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392), including a nine-story octagonal pagoda, also called as the Sari-Pagoda (relic pagoda), and the Stone Seated Buddha figure. Also there is the Jeokmyeolbogung where Buddha's bones are said to be preserved, and the large sermon hall Jeokgwangjeon Pavilion. Usually in a Jeokgwangjeon Pavilion the Vairocana figure is enshrined, but it is interesting that the Sakyamuni figure is enshrined at Jeokgwangjeon Pavilion at Woljeong temple. Woljeongsa Temple of today was restored after the Korean war in 1950 when the Chilbulbojeon, Yeongsanjeon, Gwaneungjeon, Jinyeonggak and 17 other buildings were burned down.
